January 21st saw the first Herbie’s Rail Jam of 2012 held outside Niseko’s no. 1 apres ski venue, Herbie’s Umbrella Bar. A large crowd gathered, beers and mulled wine in hand, to watch skiers and snowboarders fail or nail the rail time after time. Sparks were flying! Check out the highlights from 360niseko here:

The next Herbie’s Rail Jam is tomorrow, Monday 30 January 2012, and will start at 5pm. Everything is in place to suggest that tomorrow’s event will be bigger and better than the last one! Herbies is located in Niseko Hirafu across from the Alpen Hotel and behind The Welcome Center.

Australia Day in Niseko http://nisekoguide.com/items/view/8836/australia-day-in-niseko

Today is Australia Day. Here in Niseko we celebrated by smashing through deep, fresh powder. And there was a lot of it; over 70cm has fallen over the last couple of days. Not sure if playing in the snow is a traditional way to celebrate Australia Day but it worked out pretty well for us! Take a look at some of the action here:

Filmed 26th January 2012 in Higashiyama, Niseko

Somewhere in Hakuba http://nisekoguide.com/items/view/8675/somewhere-in-hakuba

Hakuba has been getting some awesome snowfalls lately. Check out this video from the guys at Hakuba Snow Sports School and let them welcome you to 99cm of fresh overnight! Then you’ll have a better idea of just how good it is in Japan right now.

2011/12 Season Intro http://nisekoguide.com/items/view/8292/201112-season-intro

Another fantastic early-season morning in Niseko so we filmed a few shots to give you an idea how much snow has fallen already this year. 2011/12 has already been impressive and looks like getting even better. If you haven’t already arranged your Japan ski holiday, now is the time to Book! Big thanks to the crew from 360niseko, The Barn and Rhythm – great way to start the day. Lots more to follow…

“Stupid Amounts of Almost Daily Pow” http://nisekoguide.com/items/view/8057/stupid-amounts-of-almost-daily-pow

“Why is it that a country that features in almost every snowboard movie ever made and has twice hosted the winter Olympics, still gets greeted with “I didn’t know you could snowboard in Japan” whenever you mention it to non-riders? In fact, over 70 per cent of Japan’s land is mountains, so while it’s slightly smaller than the state of California, it has over 500 ski resorts. And yes, everything you’ve heard about the Land of the Rising Sun’s endless storms and incredible pow stashes is true. The country takes facefulls of the cold air streams coming down from Siberia, which pick up moisture on their way over the Sea of Japan, so when they hit the mountains they bust their almighty load in a big way. The average resort has never seen a snow cannon in its life – instead (poor things) they have to make the best of 10 metres or more of the driest natural powder in the world … if it is stupid amounts of almost-daily pow you want, then get there in January and February.” Taken from the introduction to the Japan section of the new Whitelines Snowboard Resort Guide.

There are travel books that contain less detailed information than this guide – and it’s all right up to date. Plus the whole thing is filled with the kind of photos you’d expect from Whitelines – shot on location by the world’s best snowboard photographers. Head down to WH Smiths and grab yourself a copy now!

Some spring 2011 footage here giving you an idea how good conditions are in Niseko at the end of March. A one take wonder down a choice line. Check out rooster tails, jumps, bumps and high fives as the untracked powder gets smashed. Warning: Contains excitement induced whoops & bad language

Check out the brand new edit of Jake Blauvelt’s season. Hit after hit and so fast out of the landings, this is awesome riding. His backcountry skills are so good I don’t even know how he stays on his feet a lot of the time. The first half of the video is all Japan action.

Fantastic Lines http://nisekoguide.com/items/view/7910/fantastic-lines

Really love this video. We’ve recommended it before but I don’t think you can watch it enough times. Discover Japan like you have never seen it. Combine action packed sequences with backstage access, Japanese powder with big lines, waiting games with bullet speed riding, building/sleeping in a snowcave with riding at sunrise, and you have the recipe of this The North Face Expedition with Lucas Debari as a guest rider and the regular TimeLine crew Xavier de le Rue, Tero Repo and Guido Perrini.
